Kids As Resources

Activity:

The following activity was presented in the Lesson 3 Instruction. If you have not yet completed it, please do so now.

How different are kids’ and adults’ attitudes about groups?

What are some barriers that get in the way of maintaining a partnership between adults and kids?

The following activity will help adults and kids to understand each other a little better.

Have kids and adults answer the following questions about the other age group:
  1. What is it about the other age group (kids or adults) that makes working together harder?
  2. How do you think the other group will answer that question about your age group?
  3. What do you do to make working with the other age group difficult?
  4. What do you fear when working with or being with the other age group?
  5. What do you like about working with the other age group?

Now compare your answers with theirs. Were there any similarities or differences between your answers that were surprising? It is common to find that many concerns of youth and adults boil down to the same thing: both youth and adults want to be accepted and respected by the other and fear that they may not be. Both groups want to be heard and know that they are important to the other age group. Using youth as partners might alleviate many of these concerns.
